Bulimia Nervosa, also known as just “bulimia,” is a severe eating disorder in which a person binges on food and then uses dangerous methods to try to burn off the excess calories. People don’t aware that self-induced vomiting has an impact on both your oral and overall health.
When a bulimic self-induces vomiting repeatedly, their teeth are continuously exposed to stomach acid, which damages their enamel. Numerous dental diseases and symptoms, such as the following, can develop from persistent purging and the presence of hydrochloric acid in the mouth.
Is your smile holding you back? Research shows that people who smile more are more likely to be successful across many life domains than people who smile less. Having straight, healthy teeth can give you the confidence you need to show the world a big beautiful smile. And, a beautiful new smile may help open the doors to a fabulous new job, finding the perfect mate, making new friends, a relationship or simply a pleasant meeting.
A great smile has magical powers. Studies show that the majority of people today believe that having an attractive smile can have a positive impact. Never EVER underestimate the power of your smile!
Your smile is your calling card. Whether you’re having social interactions with your family and friends, attending a family wedding, or simply going about your daily activities and interactions, – your smile has an immediate impact on the way people perceive you. And if you’re embarrassed about your teeth – because of missing teeth, aged smiles, worn down teeth, chips, crookedness, colour and among other aesthetic imperfections– people aren’t perceiving the most confident and attractive version of you. Get expert cosmetic dental enhancement and makeover at Vogue Smiles Melbourne. We are here to help.
This acid breaks down and wears away at the enamel on the teeth. The enamel of the tooth is a thin, but strong, layer that acts as the first line of protection for the nerves and cells that are inside of the tooth.
When the enamel of a tooth is compromised, the layer beneath, called “dentin,” becomes accessible. Dentin is made of microscopic tubes that communicate signals from the surface of the tooth to the nerves within. Dentin is also softer than enamel, making it more vulnerable to erosion and damage from acid. This means that, if vomiting behaviours wear down the enamel of a tooth to expose the dentin and vomiting behaviours continue, the sensitive dentin is more easily damaged.
Beyond the teeth, “high acid content can also wear away gingival tissue in your mouth and can leave painful sores. Sometimes gingival surgeries are required to repair the missing tissue

Constant purging regularly exposes your teeth to stomach acids. These acids are essential in digesting food. However, when they are pushed into your mouth due to vomiting, dental problems arise. The acids start to erode the protective layer of the teeth, and in due time cavities can start developing on your teeth.
Once your teeth are weakened by acid erosion, they are more susceptible to other types of damage.
Your teeth may become brittle and begin to chip more easily.
With both enamel and dentin damaged, teeth are more likely to chip due to becoming brittle. Additionally, the nerves of the tooth are more exposed and this can lead to nerve damage.
Vomiting, and the impact acid has on the teeth, also changes tooth colour and/or texture. Teeth become yellowed and, sometimes, might even become clear in appearance. Additionally, their texture becomes more porous in appearance.

Gingivitis and periodontal disease are virtually always present. When someone vomits, stomach acid is driven up and continually washes against the gums, inflaming and harming them. Additionally, teeth can become loose or even fall out when the gums deteriorate.
Your mouth may feel perpetually dry if you don’t have enough saliva. Furthermore, having a dry mouth not only makes eating uncomfortable, but it can also change the flavour of your meal. Furthermore, since there is inadequate saliva to wash away the microorganisms that cause decay, having a dry mouth might harm your teeth.
It can erode your inner cheeks and roof of your mouth, creating painful sores, in a manner similar to how stomach acids damage your tooth enamel. The sores may possibly enlarge and contract an infection.
Frequent vomiting also causes damage to your inner cheeks, lips and gums. You can develop canker sores along with signs of gum disease such as bleeding and swelling. Your salivary glands may also become enlarged.
Having trouble chewing
increase in salivary gland size
Although the body is a strong, self-healing machine, there are limitations to what it can accomplish. Dental damage is not one of the many physical consequences of disordered eating practises that can be repaired through therapy.
While enamel cannot grow back, the good news is that with the right care from dental professionals and the patient themselves, what is left can be strengthened.
The patient’s needs, particularly the degree of discomfort and the size, severity, and depth of the lesions, determine the scope of the restorative therapy plan.
As a satisfactory prognosis for permanent therapy cannot be reached prior to recovery from the binge-and-purge episodes, a temporary treatment plan to stabilise the damaged dentition is typically advised.
The use of desensitising agents and direct restorations with composite or glass ionomer cements are two ultraconservative approaches that can be used in mild cases of hypersensitivity that do not involve a significant loss of hard tissue.
Indirect composite restorations to porcelain veneers/crowns may be needed to enhance the aesthetic and functional outcomes.
In severe cases, where the posterior teeth are affected by erosive tooth wear and the vertical dimension is lost, a full-mouth reconstruction is necessary.
It’s important to look after your health while recovering from bulimia.
If you are vomiting regularly, the acid in your vomit can damage your teeth over time. The following are suggestions for preventing further oral tissue damage.
Avoid brushing teeth immediately after vomiting so you do not wear away the enamel. An important note for patient to remember is that brushing after vomiting is detrimental as it is allowing for more erosion. It is better to swish with water or baking soda disssolved in water.
We encouraged to delay brushing for at least 1 hour after vomiting
Rinse your mouth with a non-acidic mouthwash
Following vomiting, rinsing with a mixture of 1 teaspoon baking soda mixed with 8 ounces of water will neutralize the hydrochloric stomach acids that damage the teeth. Rinsing with plain water is optimal when baking soda is not available to minimize the oral acidity.
Make sure you see your dentist regularly
Do not drink or eat acidic foods, such as fruit juice, during a binge and after purging
Do not smoke
Additionally, patients at risk for dental erosion should always use an additional fluoride source, such as a toothpaste and/or rinse containing fluoride combined with stannous ions
Custom-made trays and 1.1% neutral fluoride gel daily is advisable. We encourage the patient to use the trays for five minutes daily while taking a shower provides some structure and timing.
Vomiting can also lead to risk of dehydration. To avoid this, make sure you drink plenty of fluids to replace what you have vomited.
We recommend the patient to use a tongue cleaner. Tongue cleaners help remove trapped acid that remain in the papillae and can continue to bathe the lingual tooth surfaces as the hours pass.
We encourage patients to use a straw when drinking any acidic fruit juice or beverage such as soda drinks. This process will direct the acid away from the teeth surfaces.
Reinforcing healthy foods is always beneficial. Foods such as cheese and other dairy products minimize acid destruction. Sugarless gum with bicarbonate promotes salivation, provides buffers, and assists in removing particles/acid residue left on the teeth. Mints with xylitol do not have fermentable sugar, stimulate saliva, moisturize, and freshen breath. Also available are the time-released adhering disks containing xylitol.
Drinking water throughout the day also flushes the acidic residue from the oral tissues. The acidity of water is much less than that of fruit drinks and carbonated beverages.
ProNamel recommends increasing saliva production, stating that “essential components in your saliva—such as calcium and phosphate—can neutralize harmful acids and help restore minerals lost because of acids in your diet. Saliva is also your body’s natural defense against cavities
Working closely with a dentist can improve your efforts at preserving your teeth. There are many ways we can help, including:
Provide you with custom made trays for special fluoride gel that can help re-mineralize your teeth.
Use gentle care on your teeth during your check-ups and hygiene visits.
Recommend desensitizing toothpastes and rinses.
Perform provisional repairs of critical areas to preserve tooth structure.
Taking care of your teeth can be an important part of recovering from bulimia. If you are dedicated to your recovery, you can overcome this disorder, and we can help erase all marks it has left on your teeth.
