Preventing Cavities for Children

Tooth decay in children under the age of six (also known as early childhood caries) is a common chronic health condition that disproportionately affects minority and low-income children. Children with untreated cavities frequently experience pain and infections, which can interfere with eating, speaking, playing, and learning. As a result, children with poor oral health frequently miss more school and have lower grade point averages than children with good oral health. Children who develop tooth decay (or cavities) at a young age are more likely to develop lifelong oral health issues.

This article will discuss the causes of childhood caries as well as how to prevent them. More information is provided below.

Why Does My Child Keep Getting Cavities?

All children can be at risk for tooth decay and many factors can contribute to the incidence of tooth decay. According to the CDC, tooth decay (aka Dental Caries) remains one of the most common childhood diseases. It is important to seek regular dental care (6 month check-ups/examinations) so that a dentist can evaluate your child for preventive care, evaluation of caries risk, and examination of teeth and other oral structures. In this segment, we will discuss some of the sources, causes of dental decay and some preventive measures you can employ to help prevent dental decay.

We want to reiterate the importance of seeking regular dental care (6 month check-ups/examinations) so that your child’s dentist can evaluate your child’s teeth and other oral structures in the mouth. If the dentist finds that your child does have cavities/dental caries, your dentist will discuss with you treatment options in effort to address your child’s oral health. It is important to note that cavities that aren’t properly treated or managed have the potential to lead to more serious infections and pain which could impact the quality of life for your child including – speech development, learning, eating, pain, infection and general well being and overall health. Untreated decay can lead to more serious and debilitating illness and pain. We want to help ensure that every child experiences a childhood free of dental disease and illness through high quality preventive and restorative dental care!

If your child has dental decay, or has repeat incidence of dental decay, here are some things to know and consider:

Cavities are caused by bacteria

Unfortunately, tooth decay is rather common in children – it is preventable with excellent oral hygiene and diet practices, however, dental caries still remains one of the most common diseases that affects children of all ages. By the age of 4, more than 1 in every 4 children has at least one cavity. Some children do get cavities much earlier, so it’s very important to schedule your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday – to discuss prevention practices, dietary practices and other recommendations to help ensure your child has protective measures in place to help prevent tooth decay from developing. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, 42% of children who are ages 2 to 11 develop a cavity in their baby (primary) teeth.

The group of germs (bacteria) that play a major role in development of tooth decay are called mutans streptococcus. These bacteria feed on sugar and produce acid that in time, will dissolve minerals on the outermost layer of the tooth, known as enamel. As decay progress, the inner layer of the tooth will also become affected – this layer is known as the dentin. When caries progresses even further, the nerve and blood vessels of the tooth can become affected. It is important to have best preventive practices in place at an early age.  It is also important to have regular dental examination for a dentist to examine for any signs of decay that might be present and to address accordingly. Regarding tooth decay, the first sign that minerals are being lost, a process known as ‘deminerilization’ is the development of white/chalky spots on the teeth. In time, as these areas break down, a cavity may form. These same bacteria are also responsible for contributing dental plaque—a soft, sticky, yellowish film that builds up on teeth and can further cause tooth decay and /or lead to gum disease (gingivitis, periodontitis, and other infections, health concerns) if not removed regularly.

Does Tooth Decay in Milk Teeth Affect Permanent Teeth?

Looking after our children’s baby teeth (also known as milk teeth) is just as important as looking after their adult teeth (permanent teeth).

Many of us think something like, “Well, they are temporary, they can’t really be that important, right?” or “Why worry about them when they are going to fall out anyway?”

The Australian Dental Association has released a report card called The Oral Health Tracker (the Tracker) that shows the current national status of the oral health of both adults and children here in Australia.

In 2018 an alarming 34.3% of children aged 5-6 years of aged have experienced decay in their baby teeth.

6.8% of children aged 5-14 years of age experienced a toothache, while 9.3 children out of every 1000 were hospitalized with dental problems that could have been prevented if they had visited a dentist sooner.

Why worry about temporary teeth?

Many parents wonder why, if baby teeth are going to fall out, they should be taken care of?

There are multiple reasons to take care of temporary teeth. Temporary teeth play an important part in speaking, eating, and even how we breathe.

Most importantly, for dental health, temporary teeth mark out space for the permanent adult teeth that will follow, helping them come in straight and regularly distributed.

Here is a closer look at the functions of baby teeth:

  • Primary teeth make space for adult teeth and, when they erupt, guide them into the proper position in the bite. Early loss of primary teeth increase the chances of the child needed orthodontics.
  • Dental pain from cavities can adversely affect chewing, leading to the possibility of poor nutrition. If cavities are unaddressed, an infection may set in and reach other areas of the body and the brain. This sadly can sometimes be fatal.
  • If baby teeth develop an abscess or infection tooth development can be retarded, leading to damage to the permanent tooth below.
  • The tongue, lips, and cheeks work together to help us speak. If baby teeth are lost prematurely, it can lead to permanent problems with pronunciation.
  • Self-esteem – Decayed teeth are unattractive and can decrease a child’s confidence and self-esteem.

But it’s not just about keeping teeth safe:

  • Childhood cavities are linked to malnutrition – low vitamin D, low calcium, and albumin concentrations, as well as elevated PTH levels.
  • Childhood cavities are linked to eating disorders
  • Childhood cavities are associated with Iron deficiency anaemia
  • Childhood cavities are linked to extremes of failure to thrive and obesity

If decay is not properly treated, symptoms will continue to worsen, baby teeth can be lost, and even permanent teeth can be affected.

Here’s what you can do

  • Instil excellent dental hygiene habits. Teaching your children good dental habits is a key part of parenting. You want to put your children on the path to good oral health and instilling good daily dental habits is one of the best ways to ensure this.
  • Make brushing and flossing fun!One proven way to get your children in the habit of brushing their teeth twice a day is to lead them by example.Let your kids see you brush your teeth every morning and night. In fact, make it a habit of brushing and flossing with them. This makes sense, as until your kids reach six or seven, they will need your assistance with brushing and flossing. Electric toothbrushes can add fun to toothbrushing, just make sure they are being used correctly and for the same necessary two minutes each time. There are also many apps available now that will make toothbrushing fun for everyone.
  • Toothbrushing.Begin brushing is as soon as the first baby teeth appear. Even before that, a parent or caregiver should use a clean, damp washcloth to gently wipe the infant’s gums to reduce bacteria build-up.

Starting at age 2, a brushing routine should be established using a smear of fluoride toothpaste. For toddlers, parents can use a child’s size soft toothbrush with water and a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.

Children need help brushing until at least age 6, at which point they can take over brushing by themselves and also learn to floss.

Until this age children are simply not dexterous enough to manage sufficiently by themselves. A good guide is that if they are able to tie their own shoelaces or a bow, then they can brush their own teeth.

Reward your children for brushing their teeth

Purchase, print out, or make your own calendar. Every night or morning after your child has finished brushing his teeth, reward the effort with a sticker on the calendar to mark a successful cleaning.

If your child fills up a full month of the calendar with stickers, reward them with something like a bonus in allowance or a toy.

Regular Dental Visits

We recommend bringing children in for regular dental visits so that we can monitor their overall all oral health and hygiene habits. We can catch problems early and give tips and advice on how to improve cleaning techniques at home.

These appointments are always a lot of fun for the children and help to establish a trust and relaxed approach to treatments that older adults sometimes dread.

FAQ

Do Baby Teeth with Cavities Need to be Treated?

Everyone has primary (baby) teeth, and most people (around 60%) experience some level of tooth decay that affects baby teeth. But, baby teeth are temporary, and not as important as adult teeth, right? Wrong. Primary teeth don’t last forever, but they are not expendable and untreated cavities can cause serious immediate harm, and negatively affect how a young mouth develops.

YES – Cavities in Baby Teeth Must be Treated

Tooth decay is 5 times more common than asthma, 4 times more common than childhood obesity and 20 times more common than childhood diabetes. Tooth decay is an acid attack on tooth enamel that can lead to cavities – which are essentially holes in teeth. Cavities on baby teeth are treated with fillings, which help prevent the cavity from worsening or spreading.

When tooth decay is not treated by dental professionals, or with proper oral care, teeth can become riddled with cavities. Children with cavities affecting their primary teeth face many risks that affect their overall development.

Teeth Damaged by Cavities can:

– Impact children’s nutrition, and impede them from eating healthy food.

– Cause overbites, and bite alignment problems that require oral appliance to fix.

– Hinder adult teeth from growing in straight and healthy.

– Impede proper speech, and negatively affect self-esteem.

– Cause severe tooth pain, that worsens without treatment.

– Lead to infections that affect nearby teeth, and cause more cavities.

Baby teeth may be temporary, but their impermanence does not mean that they are not important. Children with cavities on their primary teeth face oral health challenges now, and in the future they mature into adults.

Symptoms of Baby Teeth with Cavities

It’s pretty easy to spot the symptoms of tooth decay and cavities, but only a dental professional can accurately diagnose and treat cavities in baby teeth. If your child exhibits any of the following, then schedule a visit with our office as soon as possible so we can treat the root of their oral health issues.

Common symptoms of cavities in baby teeth:

– Pain in the tooth when chewing, or brushing.

– Pain below the gum line that is localized around on tooth or area.

– Increased sensitivity to temperature extremes, like hot or cold beverages.

– Visible holes, discolorations, or dark spots on teeth.

– Persistent bad breath that is not alleviated by consistent brushing or mouthwash.

How to Prevent Tooth Decay and Cavities

Cavities are the most prevalent childhood disease, but it’s also the most preventable. You can empower your child to prevent cavities and tooth decay by helping them get into a proper oral health routine, which means brushing twice per day for two minutes at a time, and flossing once per day. You can take easy dietary measures to prevent cavities, too. Try removing sugary beverages from their diet, and substitute them for water, which is one of the most powerful tools in the fight against cavities.

Prevent decay with Dental Sealants

Indentations on the top of the molars typically hold onto more food particles and plaque and so are more vulnerable to ending up with cavities. Dental sealants, an effective aspect of preventive dentistry, are used to protect the teeth from damage resulting from decay. These thin preventive coverings are created from an invisible or white liquid that is brushed onto the occlusive surfaces of the back teeth. Once dried, dental sealants can defend these teeth and create a more even surface that is easier to keep plaque-free. Dental sealants don’t just stop cavities, but they could also lessen your family’s needs for tooth-coloured fillings or other corrective services down the road.

Who Is a Candidate for Sealants?

Youths in the age group 6 – 12 are usually more likely to develop decay on the occlusive surfaces of their permanent molars, so they are ideal candidates for dental sealants. In addition, those older than 12 might also consider getting sealants, for example, patients who have a hard time keeping up with optimal oral hygiene practices or who have a history of tooth decay. Receiving dental sealants is a straightforward, easy treatment that typically requires no anaesthesia. Set up a visit so a member of our dental staff can talk with you to find out if you might benefit from this simple and efficient option.

What Is the Sealant Process?

Prior to treatment, will need to evaluate the teeth to determine if dental sealants are the correct service for you or your child. To get your mouth ready for sealants, a professional on our staff will polish the enamel to get rid of any buildup, food particles, and germs from the crevices. The dried, and a fine film of sealant product is then distributed uniformly into the fissures with a tiny brush. An innovative curing light will be positioned on top of the tooth; this will strengthen the sealant covering in approximately 10 – 20 seconds. As soon as each sealant is set, our professionals will assess your chewing surfaces for alignment and provide you with tips on how to best care for your sealants.

Will Insurance Cover Dental Sealants?

Because sealants are largely applied as a preventive dental procedure, many dental insurance programs will cover them for kids or adolescents up to a specific age.

How can I help prevent dental decay/cavities in my child’s teeth?

There are certain measures you can take to help prevent or reduce the incidence or development of dental caries.

  • Regular brushing and flossing: Brushing in the morning and before bed actually removes plaque – which can serve as the reservoir for bacteria, sugar. Flossing does the same and gets in between teeth – areas where tooth brush bristles are not able to reach.
  • Begin oral/tooth cleanings when teeth erupt.
  • Non-Fluoride tooth paste available for children under 2 years of age
  • For High caries risk patients: by 2 years of age. (Parent supervision of age appropriate amount of paste –rice size/smear).
  • Recommend parent/caregiver brush teeth until child is approximately 6 years of age and is able to demonstrate thorough brushing.
  • Recommend brushing twice per day
  • Bed time most critical time to brush
  • Fluoride: fluoride toothpaste helps to restore minerals that were lost due to acid producing bacteria. Fluoride on tooth can also limit the activity acid that’s created. Fluoride that is ingested (foods/beverages) — most commonly from fluoride-treated water that we get from our water faucet in our homes, and sometimes via foods that were processed with fluoridated water. This also helps to strengthen teeth (potentially helping to strengthen permanent teeth that may be still developing under the baby teeth).
  • Fluoridated Tooth Paste: The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has the following recommendations regarding the use of Fluoride tooth paste.
  • Fluoridated toothpaste (generally 0.1% F; 1,000 ppm F) should be used twice daily as a primary preventive procedure. Brushing twice daily has greater benefits than brushing once per day. It is important that a parent or other responsible adult, dispense the appropriate volume of toothpaste, based on child’s age, onto a soft, age-appropriate sized toothbrush. The parent should also supervise the frequency of brushing, and assist/participate in performing brushing teeth for young children.
    • For children less than 2 years of age, use only a ‘smear’ of fluoridated toothpaste is recommended
    • For children aged 2 through 5 years. A ‘pea-size’ amount of toothpaste is appropriate. To maximize the beneficial effect of fluoride in the toothpaste, rinsing after brushing should be kept to a minimum or eliminated altogether.

Your dentist may recommend additional at-home topical fluoride regimens utilizing increased concentrations of fluoride if your child has an increased or high risk for dental caries. These may include over-the-counter (0.02% F; 200 ppm F) or prescription strength (0.09% F; 900 ppm F) formulations.

Additionally when your child presents for their 6 month dental check-up, your dentist may recommend an professionally applied fluoride product known as fluoride varnish to further help strengthen and protect your child’s teeth from dental caries!

There are many options for recommended exposure for fluoride including mouthwashes, supplements and treatments at the dental office. Please speak to your dentist to find out what’s the best option for your children.

Less exposure to sugary or starchy foods: The more frequently sugary, starchy foods are consumed throughout the day and in between meals, the more bacteria can build up. Remember, the bacteria build up, digest the sugar and produce acid as a waste product. The bacteria feeds on sugar – the acid by-product can lead to loss of the minerals in the tooth surface – leading to dental caries ‘Cavities’.  Try to limit the sugary and starchy (chips, breads, cookies, etc.) snacks your child eats. Starch turns into sugar once eaten. It is especially important to avoid starches and sugars before bedtime

    • General Dentist Melbourne CBD, Top leading Cosmetic Dentist in Melbourne CBD
  • Visit the dentist regularly: Children should have their first dental visit by their first birthday, and then every six months for a cleaning and check-up/examination. The early preventive measures are very important to help prevent decay from forming. If decay is already present – early detection is best to address before the dental caries progresses further potentially requiring more extensive treatment.
  • Dental Sealants: Dental sealants can be an excellent preventive measure. Depending on your child’s age, caries susceptability and caries risk assessment, your child’s dentist may recommend sealants to the chewing surface of molars. In many cases, dental sealants are recommended for your child’s permanent molars. A dental sealant is a flowable plastic type material that bonds to the tooth. It is applied on the chewing surface of molars – it helps to ‘seal’ the deep grooves on the tooth surface which helps to ensure that the tooth has a smooth surface that a tooth brush can more easily clean.
  • We always encourage you to speak with your child’s dentist to help ensure your child has the preventive measures in place to help reduce the chances of dental caries developing in your child’s teeth. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have!

Dental Anxiety Tips for Kids

Overcoming Children’s Dental Anxiety

A visit to the dentist can be a frightening experience for a child. Especially on their first visit, or if they had a bad experience on their previous visit. As parents understand the value of routine exams and promoting good oral hygiene, but our children frequently do not.

This article discusses what we’ve seen in terms of children’s dental anxiety, as well as tips to help your child overcome their fear. Additionally, this relieves stress for you!

7 Dental Anxiety Tips for Kids

Dental Anxiety Tips for Kids # 1

Gradual Exposition

Consult your dentist about when to start your child’s routine dental exams. Starting them young with gradual exposure to the dentist, dental office, sitting in the chair, instruments, and so on will gradually familiarise them. When children and adults sit in the dental chair with their mouths open, they frequently feel out of control. The more positive our experiences in the chair, the more trust we usually gain. Give your child the security of sitting next to them and allow them to ask the dentist questions and express their feelings verbally. Gradual exposure is also extremely beneficial when undergoing a procedure. If they are used to routine visits, it will become easier and they also have established trust with the dental office easing their nerves a bit.

Dental Anxiety Tips for Kids # 2

Make the Dentist’s Office More Familiar

Many studies on “fear of the unknown” have been published by psychologists. The less we know about something, the more anxious our minds become. As parents, discuss the dentist with your children. Many children play dentist or doctor to become more familiar with the doctor-patient relationship. We find that explaining what we are doing and why we are doing it to some children helps. Understanding that each procedure effectively cleans and protects teeth can help children feel more at ease during dental visits.

Dental Anxiety Tips for Kids # 3

Ask Your Child What They Are Scared Of

“Why are you afraid of the dentist?” you should ask your child. “What do you fear will happen?” This step may appear to be simple and straightforward, but it is frequently overlooked. Because it is common for children to be afraid of the dentist, we frequently assume the cause of this fear. Simple questions will allow them to express their fear and allow you to address it directly. If the visit is for a routine check-up, inform them that it is only to check for “sugar bugs” and to ensure the health of their smile. If it’s for a procedure, don’t lie to them, but keep the details vague. You don’t want your child to lose faith in you or the dentist if you make a mistake.

Dental Anxiety Tips for Kids # 4

Role Playing

A “pretend dental visit” with your child is a fun activity to do with them. Make it simple, easy, and enjoyable. This is an excellent opportunity to emphasise the significance of good oral hygiene. Explain what a dentist does and how it keeps our teeth healthy. Begin by playing dentist on your child or stuffed animals. Be extremely gentle, caring, informative, and, most importantly, entertaining! Allow your child to play dentist with his or her stuffed animals. This is a fun way to prepare them for their visit and give them something to talk about with their dentist.

Overall, emphasise the dentist’s positive qualities rather than his flaws. If you are afraid of the dentist, be very careful not to pass this fear on to your child. Choose a dentist you trust and feel at ease with, and your child will benefit from it. Make the experience enjoyable for them. While you do not need to reward your child for going to the dentist, establishing a positive association is beneficial. Praise them for their good behaviour, take them to the park, or do anything else your child enjoys.

Dental Anxiety Tips for Kids # 5

Negative Reinforcement should be avoided.

Children become accustomed to the concept of good behaviour being rewarded and bad behaviour being punished. Unfortunately, this leads to some children associating a filling with punishment for not taking care of their teeth. While understanding the relationship between oral care and cavities is important, it is also important to understand that having a cavity is normal. We recommend teaching children that brushing and flossing reduces their chances of getting cavities. Similarly, reducing sugary and acidic foods/beverages such as soda or candy can reduce that risk. That being said, a dental filling is not a punishment; it is a procedure that can help us maintain the health of our teeth.

Children should not be embarrassed to own one. In fact, some children with poor oral hygiene may not develop cavities while others with good oral hygiene do. Brushing and flossing are the best ways to prevent cavities, but because every child’s teeth are different, fillings should be viewed as a necessary procedure to protect their teeth.

Dental Anxiety Tips for Kids # 6

Think About Using Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement should be used with caution, but it can be beneficial. Anything that can be done to make the dental visit more enjoyable is a good place to start. This is why dentists give dental stickers and other goodies to children to help them celebrate good oral health. However, it is critical to avoid bribery.

Dental Anxiety Tips for Kids # 7

Avoid Lying to Your Children About Going to the Dentist.

Lying to their children is a common mistake that some parents make. Whether it’s telling them they’re going somewhere else only to end up at the dentist, or another similar lie, it can be damaging to their trust. Before going to the dentist, children should be informed so that they do not feel duped.

Reasons Why Some People Are More Prone to Cavities Than Others

You may brush your teeth twice or more every single day, floss to make sure you’re reaching every nook and cranny in your mouth, and you might even use an oral rinse to top it off. But somehow you are still getting cavities. Maybe you’ve noticed friends or family members whose oral cleaning routines aren’t as diligent as yours but don’t get cavities nearly as often as you do. Why is that?

Some people are more susceptible to cavities for a number of reasons, not all of which are to do with improper teeth cleaning. Read on to find out what they are.

Reasons Why Some People Are More Prone to Cavities Than Others - Dentist in Melbourne CBD - Dentist near me Melbourne

Diet

The culprit for why you might be more prone to cavities could be as simple as what you’re eating. Eating too many snacks and beverages filled with sugar is a major issue when it comes to your oral health and should be the first place you look to cut down for the sake of your teeth. Unless immediately cleaned with a toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste, sugars sit around and between teeth, and along the gum line. These sugars become fuel for destructive bacteria which multiply and erode tooth enamel, which is the protective layer of teeth that protect against decay which leads to cavities.

Sugary foods to avoid include sodas, juices, sweets, and carbohydrates, such as white breads. To combat cavities, replace these foods with crunchy fruits and vegetables that are naturally low in sugars, such as carrots and celery, and drink water to flush away food debris and sugars that may be lingering among teeth. Bring your toothbrush and toothpaste with you to work to brush your teeth after lunch to ensure that no particles or sugars are left behind.

Oral bacteria

There are oral bacteria, or microbes, that are more aggressive than others when reacting with sugars in the mouth. This means that the bacteria that naturally forms in some people’s mouths can be more damaging than the bacteria that forms in other people’s mouths. This destructive bacteria is what breaks down the protective barriers of the teeth and can cause decay down through the root of the tooth, which is how cavities are formed. To combat aggressive oral bacteria, couple your regular brushing and flossing routine with an oral rinse that fights cavities by enhancing the tooth’s natural protection.

Dry Mouth

If you experience a feeling of dryness in your mouth regularly, this could affect your oral health. Saliva is essential to combat cavities because it washes away destructive food particles, sugars, and bacteria in the mouth naturally. There could be various reasons why dry mouth occurs, including medication side effects, chemotherapy treatments, and sickness. To combat dry mouth and protect your teeth from cavities, rinse daily with an enamel enhancing mouth wash to protect teeth, and try to drink plenty of water throughout the day to make up for the lack of natural moisture in your mouth. Consult your healthcare professional for additional treatment for dry mouth symptoms.

Gum Recession

If gums recede far enough, the roots of the teeth can become exposed past where the tooth enamel naturally covers. This means that the base of the tooth is vulnerable and any bacteria that would naturally build could cause decay much easier, which results in cavities. Brushing lightly with an ultra soft toothbrush away from the gums is important to avoid causing further recession. Couple this technique with fluoridated toothpaste, an enamel enhancing oral rinse, and counsel from your dental professional to ensure that gum recession is not due to a larger health issue.

Tooth shape

Teeth that have naturally deep grooves are more susceptible to cavities because they are likely to catch food particles, sugars, and destructive bacteria easily. These grooves are more difficult to properly clean regularly and are closer to the root of the tooth so any erosion that does happen is more likely to have more destructive results because of its proximity to the vulnerable part of the tooth. Decay in these grooves is much more likely to cause cavities. Ensuring that these troublesome teeth shapes are cleaned fully twice each day and that no food particles are left behind after eating is the best way to combat and prevent cavities.

4 Tips in Reducing Your Risk of getting Cavities

If you are more prone to cavities than others, you are not doomed to have a decayed mouth. In fact, there are steps you can take to significantly reduce your risk of cavities. Here are a few ideas to help you protect your mouth:

1. Take charge of your overall health.

2. Reduce your intake of sugary and acidic beverages, and drink more water.

A low-sugar diet reduces the exposure of your teeth to harmful acids. A healthy lifestyle can also lower your risk of developing mouth-related conditions such as diabetes.

3. Prioritize oral hygiene.

Brush your teeth regularly, properly and with the right brush.

Did you know that your mouth is home to approximately a billion microbes that recycle what you eat and drink?
That’s how they cause tooth decay in our mouths: they grow by feeding on the sugars in the foods and drinks we consume, then excrete the waste as a biofilm known as dental plaque. This plaque allows all of those little recyclers to linger on your teeth for longer, eventually producing acids that wear down the tooth enamel and cause cavities.

If left untreated, the eventual disease process, which can begin with bacteria in the mouth, has the potential to spread to other areas of the body, complicating chronic conditions ranging from diabetes to heart disease.

Brushing Aids in Bacteria Removal!

Brushing your teeth is one of the simplest, yet most effective, ways to prevent cavities due to the significant bacteria and plaque fighting power it provides in just a few minutes per day. Brush your teeth after meals and before going to bed. Brushing before bed (or after a late-night snack) is especially important because allowing bacteria to linger on your teeth overnight can cause enamel-damaging acid to form (ultimately leading to cavities).

Additionally, using an antimicrobial mouthwash helps to clean away bacteria while also freshening the breath.

Want to boost your bacteria-fighting abilities throughout the day? Brush your teeth after lunch at work. If possible, keep a separate tooth brush and paste kit at work.

Make flossing a habit (we promise, it’s simple once you get started).

We all know that no one enjoys flossing. But consider this: our teeth have five sides, and all of them require regular cleaning. Even if we brush every day, we only clean three of those sides. So, without flossing, brushing alone only cleans about half of your teeth’s surface.

And keep in mind that flossing only takes a few minutes per day – what else can you do for a few minutes that can improve your health so drastically?

So, how do you get into the habit of flossing? Consider it’multitasking,’ which we all enjoy doing. Try flossing while watching TV or while reading.

Excellent oral hygiene also lowers your risk of developing gum disease and the gum disease itself.

4. Visit your dentist regularly

Regular dental cleanings can help prevent cavities, but they aren’t the only thing your dentist can do. Sealants, for example, may be an appropriate treatment if you have deep grooves in your teeth. Fluoride treatments can help to strengthen your enamel. If your teeth are out of place, your dentist can refer you to an orthodontist who can straighten your smile and make it easier for you to keep your mouth clean and cavity-free.

NOTHING IS HURTING, SO YOU DON’T NEED TO GO TO THE DENTIST, RIGHT?  Going to the dentist might not be your favourite thing in the world, but it is extremely important. It can be easy to make up excuses, whether it is out of fear, cost or just a bit of laziness and you might skip appointments by telling yourself that you’ll go when a problem presents itself. However, that is a dangerous approach to your health. By the time a problem occurs, it might have become more serious, while other problems may have been lurking out of sight. The truth is that avoiding regular appointments often results in more problems, more time in the dentist’s chair and more money out of your pocket.

Tooth Decay Treatment Melbourne CBD - Best General Dentist in Melbourne CBD

Progressive diseases are ones that gain momentum over time. The longer you wait to address the issue at hand, the worse the outcome and more expensive can be for you. A small decay means just a simple less costly filling. While waiting until you have a pimple or abscess or infection on the tooth, means an expensive Root canal treatment and Crown. If you don’t want to save the tooth doing those treatment, then your only option to stop pain would be to extract the tooth.

Causes of Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is a common disorder, second only to the common cold. It most often occurs in children and young adults, but it can affect anyone. Tooth decay is a common cause of tooth loss in younger people.

Bacteria are normally found in your mouth. These bacteria change foods, especially sugar and starch, into acids. Bacteria, acid, food pieces, and saliva combine in the mouth to form a sticky substance called plaque. Plaque sticks to the teeth. It is most common on the back molars, just above the gum line on all teeth, and at the edges of fillings.

Plaque that is not removed from the teeth turns into a substance called tartar, or calculus. Plaque and tartar irritate the gums, resulting in gingivitis and periodontitis.

Plaque begins to build up on teeth within 20 minutes after eating. If it is not removed, it will harden and turn into tartar (calculus).

The acids in plaque damage the enamel covering your teeth. It also creates holes in the tooth called cavities. Cavities usually do not hurt, unless they grow very large and affect nerves or cause a tooth fracture. An untreated cavity can lead to an infection in the tooth called a tooth abscess. Untreated tooth decay also destroys the inside of the tooth (pulp). This requires more extensive treatment, or possibly removal of the tooth.

Carbohydrates (sugars and starches) increase the risk of tooth decay. Sticky foods are more harmful than non-sticky foods because they remain on the teeth. Frequent snacking increases the time that acids are in contact with the surface of the tooth.

Exams and Tests of Tooth Decay

Most cavities are discovered in the early stages during routine dental check ups.

A dental exam may show that the surface of the tooth is soft.

Dental x-rays may show some cavities before they can be seen just by just looking at the teeth.

Treatment of Tooth Decay

Treatment can help prevent tooth damage from leading to cavities.

Treatment may involve:

  • Fillings
  • Crowns
  • Root canals

Dentists fill teeth by removing the decayed tooth material with a drill and replacing it with a material such as composite resin, glass ionomer, or amalgam. Composite resin more closely match the natural tooth appearance, and are preferred for front teeth. There is a trend to use high strength composite resin in the back teeth as well.

Crowns or “caps” are used if tooth decay is extensive and there is limited tooth structure, which may cause weakened teeth. Large fillings and weak teeth increase the risk of the tooth breaking. The decayed or weakened area is removed and repaired. A crown is fitted over the remainder of the tooth. Crowns are often made of gold, porcelain, or porcelain attached to metal.

A root canal is recommended if the nerve in a tooth dies from decay or injury. The center of the tooth, including the nerve and blood vessel tissue (pulp), is removed along with decayed portions of the tooth. The roots are filled with a sealing material. The tooth is filled, and a crown is needed in most cases.

Outlook (Prognosis) of Tooth Decay

Treatment often saves the tooth. Treatment is less painful and less expensive if it is done early.

You may need numbing medicine and prescription pain medicines to relieve pain during or after dental work.

Nitrous oxide with local anesthetic or other medicines may be an option if you are afraid of dental treatments.

Possible Complications of Tooth Decay

Dental cavities can lead to:

  • Discomfort or pain
  • Fractured tooth
  • Inability to bite down on tooth
  • Tooth abscess
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Infection of the bone
  • Bone loss

Prevention of Tooth Decay

Oral hygiene is necessary to prevent cavities. This consists of regular professional cleaning (every 6 months), brushing at least twice a day, and flossing at least daily. X-rays may be taken yearly to detect possible cavity development in high-risk areas of the mouth.

It is best to eat chewy, sticky foods (such as dried fruit or candy) as part of a meal rather than alone as a snack. If possible, brush your teeth or rinse your mouth with water after eating these foods. Limit snacking, since it creates a constant supply of acid in your mouth. Avoid constant sipping of sugary drinks or frequent sucking on candy and mints.

Dental sealants can prevent some cavities. Sealants are thin plastic-like coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars. This coating prevents the buildup of plaque in the deep grooves on these surfaces. Sealants are often applied on the teeth of children, shortly after their molars come in. Older people may also benefit from tooth sealants.

Fluoride is often recommended to protect against tooth decay. People who get fluoride in their drinking water or by taking fluoride supplements have less tooth decay.

Topical fluoride is also recommended to protect the surface of the teeth. This may include a fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash. Many dentists include application of topical fluoride solutions (applied to a localized area of the teeth) as part of routine visits.

Symptoms of a rotting teeth

Tooth decay, or a rotten tooth, refers to a permanently damaged area on the tooth’s surface. Because some cavities can go undetected with no symptoms, it’s essential to schedule regular dental visits. A dentist can identify and treat cavities early to stop further tooth rot.

An untreated cavity can become larger and gradually affect the deeper layers of the tooth. Along with a hole, other signs of a rotten tooth include:

  • toothache
  • sensitivity to hot or cold
  • brown, black, or white spots on the tooth
  • bad breath
  • unpleasant taste in the mouth
  • swelling

A rotten tooth isn’t only an adult problem, it can also occur in infants, toddlers, and children. Symptoms of tooth rot in children are generally the same as those in adults but may also include swollen gums, irritability, and a fever, which indicates an infection.

If your child seems irritable and is unable to express the location of pain or discomfort, check inside their mouth and look for signs of a problem.

Other Causes of rotten teeth

There isn’t only one cause of rotten teeth, but rather a collection of possible causes. Understanding factors for tooth decay can help prevent future problems with your teeth.

Poor dental hygiene

Regular brushing and flossing are necessary to remove plaque and keep your teeth strong and healthy. Brush your teeth at least two times a day and floss daily. Additionally, see a dentist twice a year for a professional dental cleaning.

Poor diet

Eating a diet that’s high in sugar and carbohydrates can also contribute to tooth rot because these foods cling to the teeth.

Sugar also feeds bacteria, and the more bacteria in your mouth, the more acid in your mouth. If you eat a lot of sugary foods and don’t brush regularly, you may experience faster breakdown of your tooth enamel, which is the outer layer of your tooth. Likewise, consuming too many acidic drinks (soda and juices) and having acid reflux disease can also cause tooth decay. The acid in beverages can slowly dissolve tooth enamel. With acid reflux, stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus and mouth can also erode tooth enamel.

Dry mouth

If your salivary glands don’t produce enough saliva to help wash away plaque and bacteria in your mouth, you could have more plaque and acid in your mouth, increasing the risk of tooth decay or rot.

Dental crevices

Tooth decay can also occur if you have deep dental crevices. These groves can make it harder to brush effectively, and if plaque settles in these groves, it can eat away at your tooth’s surface. Applying a dental sealant to healthy teeth may prevent the buildup of plaque.

Fluoride deficiency

Fluoride is a natural mineral that can strengthen tooth enamel, making it resistant to cavities. Fluoride is added to public water supplies, but it’s not usually found in bottled water. If you don’t use a toothpaste with fluoride or drink from your city’s water supply, there’s a risk for tooth decay.

Baby bottle

Tooth decay can also occur at an early age if your child falls asleep with a bottle of milk, juice, or formula in their mouth, or if you dip your child’s pacifier in sugar or honey. In both instances, sugar can collect around the teeth and lead to tooth decay.

Preventing cavities at home

Risk factors for cavities include:

  • dry mouth or having a medical condition that reduces the amount of saliva in the mouth
  • eating foods that cling to teeth, like candy and sticky foods
  • frequent snacking on sugary foods or drinks, like soda, cereals, and ice cream
  • heartburn (due to acid)
  • inadequate cleaning of teeth
  • bedtime infant feeding

Once a cavity has penetrated the dentin, you won’t be able to get rid of it at home. The following home remedies might help prevent cavities or treat “pre-cavities” by remineralizing weakened areas of your enamel before a cavity develops:

1. Sugar-free gum

Chewing sugar-free gum after meals has been shown in clinical trials to help remineralize enamel. Gum containing xylitol has been researched extensively for its ability to stimulate saliva flow, raise the pH of plaque, and reduce S. mutans, but long-term studies are needed.

Sugar-free gum containing a compound called casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) has been shown to reduce S. mutans even more than xylitol-containing chewing gum. You can find this type of gum in stores.

2. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is important to help absorb calcium and phosphate from the food you eat. StudiesTrusted Source show an inverse relationship between eating foods high in vitamin D and calcium, like yogurt, and cavities in young children. You can get vitamin D from dairy products, like milk and yogurt. You can also get vitamin D from the sun.

3. Brush with fluoride toothpaste

Fluoride plays an important role in preventing cavities and remineralizing enamel. Extensive research has been done to show that regularly brushing your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste prevents cavities.

Most studies have been conducted either in children or adolescents, so more research is needed in adults and the elderly.

4. Cut out sugary foods

This is the cavity remedy that no one likes to hear — stop eating so much sugar. The WHO says that eating sugar is the most important risk factor for cavities. They recommend reducing your sugar intake to less than 10 percent of your total caloric intake for the day.

If you’re going to eat sugar, try not to snack on sugary foods throughout the day. Once the sugar is gone, your enamel has a chance to remineralize. But if you are constantly eating sugar, your teeth don’t get the chance to remineralize.

My Tooth Hurts – What Should I Do? How To Relieve Tooth Pain

What Causes Toothaches?

My Tooth Hurts – What Should I Do? How To Relieve Tooth Pain

You get pain in your mouth for a variety of reasons. Toothaches tend to come from something happening in your teeth or gums.

  • An injury to your jaw
  • Sinus infection
  • Tooth decay
  • A filling falling out
  • Infected tooth
  • Food or something else wedged between your teeth
  • Wisdom teeth crowning through your gums or pressing against the surrounding teeth
  • Gum disease, also known as Gingivitis or periodontal disease
  • Teeth grinding

What You Can Do About Toothache Pain?

How To Relieve Tooth Pain

Here are some ways that you can stop or at least ease off your pain:

  • Take Some Over-the-Counter Medication – Meds such as Ibuprofen (or related Advil and Motrin), acetaminophen (Tylenol), or aspirin are all good at relieving pain you may have from a toothache. Numbing gels can help, but make sure not to use products with benzocaine for young children.
  • Elevate Your Head –Elevation helps to support an injured area. Keeping your head up will stop your blood from rushing to and staying in your head. The more blood pools in an area of your body, the more intense the pain will be.
  • Watch What you Eat – Mouthwash, especially mouthwash with alcohol, can disinfect your teeth and mouth and even numb it a bit.
  • Ice the Painful Area – Ice is a great tool in dampening pain and reducing inflammation. Give it a try and alternate between having an ice pack on for 10-20 minutes, then keeping it off for that amount of time.

When is it Time to See the Dentist?

Right away! Especially if you experience the following:

  • Severe pain
  • A toothache that lasts more than two days
  • You get a fever, headache, or more pain when you open your mouth
  • Breathing or swallowing becomes difficult

Can Tooth Damage from cavity be Reversed?

If your dentist tells you that you have a cavity forming, there are ways to stop early-stage tooth decay from progressing into a full-blown cavity. The process known as remineralization can occur, which can reverse tooth decay.

Remineralization can correct damage to a tooth. When a cavity begins to form, the enamel or dentin starts to lose valuable minerals that protect the tooth. You can help to put these valuable materials back into the tooth by remineralizing it. The tooth will start to strengthen itself and repair the decay to the point where a cavity is no longer forming.

While remineralization can reverse some damage to the surface of a tooth and prevent some cavities, it won’t work for all situations. If the damage to the enamel or dentin is too severe, the process will be ineffective, and the cavity will need to be treated by your dentist.

What Happens if You Don’t Treat a Cavity?

Cavity might as well be a four letter word.

Cavities have been a bad word for as long as they have had a name. It is no secret that the very thought of one may make your teeth clench in opposition to treatment.

The majority of people are familiar with cavities and know the treatment process, including regular cleaning exams. But most people don’t know the process of what happens to a tooth if it’s left untreated.

We hope that by telling you what happens with a bad cavity will lead you to making proper oral hygiene a part of your daily routine. Here’s a brief summary of what to expect if a cavity goes untreated.

A Bad Cavity Can Bring Further Decay

Cavities don’t just go away on their own. If you ignore a cavity, it will continue to grow in size. One bad cavity could lead to a second cavity before long. Decay of the tooth will widen and deepen; this will make you more prone to brittle teeth leaving them to the possibility of cracking and breaking.

How Serious Cavities Impact Your Nerves

Taking it a step further, if cavities go untreated the decay will eventually reach your nerves. This can be severely painful because nerves become exposed to the air as a cavity progresses. Nerve pain can be an ongoing and excruciating ordeal as the sensitivity within the tooth continues to be compromised. By this time, the tooth will either need a root canal or to be extracted.

Infection from a Bad Cavity

Infection in the mouth and jaw area is of greatest concern even above the pain you may experience. Infection can lead to increased pain, swelling, and other health concerns. You’ll need an antibiotic to help fight the infection along with treatment of the tooth to take care of the cavity in whatever way the dentist feels is best.

As you can see, letting a cavity progress certainly has a snowball effect. Treatment is very easy when cavities begin but can be much more involved if you ignore them. If you suspect that you have a cavity, you should seek immediate treatment from your dentist.

Complications from tooth cavities

A tooth cavity can cause a variety of complications if it’s left untreated. These include:

  • ongoing tooth pain
  • a tooth abscess, which can become infected and trigger life-threatening complications, like an infection that enters the bloodstream or sepsis
  • the development of pus around the infected tooth
  • an increased risk for breaking or chipping a tooth
  • difficulty chewing food

You may cause damage to your tooth that can’t be reversed if you put off seeing a dentist. At this point, the only way to fix the cavity is for your dentist to remove the tooth and replace it with an implant or bridge.

Cavity Prevention Is Simple

You can do your part in helping to protect your teeth from tooth decay by following a few simple guidelines:

  • Gently brush your teeth at least twice a day for a full two minutes with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss once a day.
  • Incorporate a fluoride mouthwash into your oral care routine.
  • Avoid sugary and starchy foods, and avoid frequent snacking.

Having regular teeth cleanings and exams every six months is another necessary step in eliminating cavity-causing plaque and tartar. During these exams, your dentist will be able to identify any early signs of tooth decay and give you the tools and knowledge to combat cavities.

While everyone can agree that it’s important to give your teeth and gums the proper care they deserve, some people have no idea how to really go about it. Quit Smoking

Whether you are an occasional smoker or heavy cigarette user, tobacco products of any kind can wreak havoc on your smile. While there are many studies that discuss the health issues involved in smoking you may not realize that smoking can also cause a host of oral health problems, from chronic bad breath and decay to gum disease, infection, reduced healing and even oral cancer. If you want to really improve your oral health then it’s time to to ditch the habit.

Your Diet

Just as what you eat affects your general health it can also affect your oral health, as well. If you eat a diet that is rich in sugar, starches and processed foods, sodas, sports drinks and fruit juices then chances are very good that you will deal with decay, gum disease and enamel erosion. If you want to keep teeth, gums and bones healthy and strong, then you’ll want to eat more vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and low-fat dairy.

Swap Out Toothbrush Heads

Your toothbrush isn’t meant to last forever, but most people put off buying a new toothbrush. However, frayed bristles can be too harsh for enamel and can lead to scratches or excessive wear and tear. The best thing you can do is replace your toothbrush head once you notice the bristles starting to splay out (usually about every three to four months). You should also replace your toothbrush head after an illness since the bristles can harbor bacteria.

Don’t forget that your trip to the dentist every six months is important for a healthy smile.

Get into the habit of flossing daily

People tend to hate flossing, and it’s hard for some people to stay motivated. There isn’t a cause and effect with immediate improvement and visible results by flossing your teeth like there is by brushing your hair. I can’t stress enough how important flossing is for the long-term health of your teeth and gums. Try to think of it as an investment in your future and of the money you will save by incorporating a simple step into your daily routine. Flossing both after breakfast and before bed is ideal. If you were to do it only once per day, evening is better. When we sleep, we produce less saliva, which irrigates food from your teeth. Flossing before sleep reduces decay and gum disease.

Oral Hygiene FAQ

What should someone look for (or stay away from) when choosing a toothpaste?

The most important thing to look for when choosing a toothpaste is to find one that is low-abrasive. You should definitely avoid the tartar-control and whitening toothpastes because they very abrasive and wear away the tooth enamel, which make the teeth appear darker in color and more sensitive.

What is the correct way to brush your teeth? What is the recommended number of times to brush daily? How long?

Brush your teeth in small circles, two teeth at a time, at a 45-degree angle to the tooth enamel. Brush your teeth at least two times per day slowly for one to two minutes. Ideally, you should brush your teeth right after every meal and especially after eating sugary foods.

How often should I replace my toothbrush? What are the recommended types/brands of toothbrushes? Electric vs. manual?

Toothbrushes need to be replaced as soon as the bristles start to bend. Any brand of toothbrush is fine as long as it has soft or extra-soft bristles.

Are there certain foods to avoid to keep your teeth healthy and white?

Avoiding excessive amounts of soda pop, coffee, and tea will reduce stain build up. Soda pop will not only stain your teeth but also, due to its acid content, will also chemically erode the enamel. Thinner enamel allows the darker under color of the tooth to show.

Gum Disease – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

You have a great smile: beautiful white teeth all perfectly aligned. But unbeknownst to you, periodontal gum disease might even now be damaging your gum tissues, setting the stage for future tooth and bone loss — and a ruined smile.

What Is Gum Disease?

The gums are soft pink tissues that cover the dense jawbone that keeps your teeth anchored in place. Plaque and tartar can form around the base of the gumline and cause an infection—the result is gum disease. There are three main stages of this oral condition: mild, moderate, and advanced gum disease (the latter is usually referred to as periodontitis).

Stages of Gum Disease

While it’s easy to miss the early stage of this gum disease caused by bacterial plaque on tooth surfaces, there are a few signs if you pay close attention. Bleeding gums after moderate brushing or flossing could indicate normally resilient gum tissues have begun to weaken. You may also notice a slight redness and swelling around the margins of the gums and a bad taste or breath. As it progresses, you may experience painful abscesses (infected pockets that develop between the gums and tooth) and loose teeth, a late sign of tissue detachment and bone loss. If you are a smoker, nicotine reduces swelling and bleeding of the gums, removing signs you have a disease. If you smoke, you need to see your dentist regularly.

The Dangers of Gum Disease

Gum disease is just as much of a concern for dentists as tooth decay. It’s important that you understand the dangers of gum disease so that you can take swift action  to heal your gums and save your smile.

Like dental disease, gum disease can cause tooth loss when it isn’t treated quickly and thoroughly. The bad bacterium multiplies and eliminates good tissue. Gum disease can also cause the bone to deteriorate completely, and the infection can spread to other areas of the mouth if it isn’t stopped in a timely fashion. In some cases, untreated gum disease can also aggravate unrelated general health conditions, like cardiovascular issues. If you do not have the symptoms treated by a dentist and take on better hygiene habits, gum disease could have a significant effect on your oral and overall health.

Smoking and Gum Disease

Your risk for gum disease increases if you’re not brushing or flossing effectively. You can also have a higher risk if you’ve inherited thinner gum tissues from your parents. But there’s one other risk factor for gum disease that’s just as significant: if you have a smoking habit.

According to research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), a little more than sixty percent of smokers develop gum disease in their lifetime at double the risk of non-smokers. And it’s not just cigarettes—any form of tobacco use (including smokeless) or even e-cigarettes increases the risk for gum disease.

Smoking alters the oral environment to make it friendlier for disease-causing bacteria. Some chemicals released in tobacco can damage gum tissues, which can cause them to gradually detach from the teeth. This can lead to tooth loss, which smokers are three times more likely to experience than non-smokers.

Smoking may also hide the early signs of gum disease like red, swollen or bleeding gums. But because the nicotine in tobacco restricts the blood supply to gum tissue, the gums of a smoker with gum disease may look healthy. But it’s a camouflage, which could delay prompt treatment that could prevent further damage.

Finally because tobacco can inhibit the body’s production of antibodies to fight infection, smoking may slow the healing process after gum disease treatment.  This also means tobacco users have a higher risk of a repeat infection, something known as refractory periodontitis. This can create a cycle of treatment and re-infection that can significantly increase dental care costs.

It doesn’t have to be this way. You can substantially lower your risk of gum disease and its complications by quitting any kind of tobacco habit. As it leaves your system, your body will respond much quicker to heal itself. And quitting will definitely increase your chances of preventing gum disease in the first place.

Quitting, though, can be difficult, so it’s best not to go it alone. Talk with your doctor about ways to kick the habit; you may also benefit from the encouragement of family and friends, as well as support groups of others trying to quit too.

Gum Disease Treatments

While renewed daily oral hygiene is important for stopping gum disease, you may also need professional care to bring it under control. The main treatment calls for the manual removal of plaque and calculus (hardened deposits of plaque) that are sustaining the infection. Dentists and hygienists both can perform scaling, which removes plaque and calculus at or just below the gum line, and root planing to clean accessible root surfaces.

In more advanced cases, though, you may need the services of a periodontist, a specialist in treating diseased or injured gums, bone and other connective tissues that support the teeth. They’re also skilled in more advanced treatments like gum flap surgery that more fully exposes a tooth’s root area for plaque and calculus (or tartar) removal, or tissue grafting procedures that improve the health and appearance of damaged gums.

Your gums need immediate therapy, including an intense cleaning, when there are signs of disease. These are the most common treatments for gum disease or periodontitis that can offer:

– Scaling and root planing (a very deep cleaning around the gumline)
– Periodontal surgery (opening the soft gum tissue to completely remove diseased matter).
– Antibiotic therapy to control the infection.
– Gum grafting (to restore lost bone tissue).
– Cosmetic gum surgery (to restore gum tissue around the teeth).

 Don’t Ignore Bleeding Gums

Are bleeding gums something you should be concerned about?  Many think bleeding gums is a sign they are brushing too hard; this is possible, but unlikely. It’s much more probable that irritated and bleeding gums are a sign of periodontal (gum) disease.

Periodontal disease can occur when a bacteria-rich biofilm in the mouth (also called plaque) is allowed to build up on tooth and gum surfaces. Plaque causes the gums to become inflamed, as the immune system responds to the bacteria. Eventually, this can cause gum tissue to pull away from the teeth, forming bacteria-filled “pockets” under the gum surface. If left untreated, it can lead to more serious infection, and even tooth loss.

What should you do if your gums bleed regularly when brushing or flossing? The first step is to come in for a thorough examination. In combination with a regular oral exam (and possibly x-rays or other diagnostic tests), a simple (and painless) instrument called a periodontal probe can be used to determine how far any periodontal disease may have progressed. Armed with this information, we can determine the most effective way to fight the battle against gum disease.

Above all, don’t wait too long to come in for an exam! Bleeding gums are “a sign that things aren’t quite right.

4-Step Process for Achieving Your Highest Oral Health Possible

You know the basics for a healthy mouth: daily oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups. But there are other elements unique to you that also factor into your oral care: the mouth and facial structure you inherited from your parents (like a poor bite) and your past history with dental disease. Both of these help define your individual risk factors for potential dental problems.

That’s why you need a treatment strategy personalized to you to achieve the best health possible for your teeth and gums. We create this plan by using a detailed and thorough 4-step process.

Step 1: Identify your unique risk factors

To find your risk factors for dental disease, we carefully assess your history and other areas of oral function and health: the soundness of your supporting bone and gum structures; your teeth’s structural integrity and any effects from decay, enamel erosion or trauma; functional issues like a poor bite, a jaw joint disorder or a grinding habit; and problems with appearance like disproportional gums.

Step 2: Prioritize risk factors and form the treatment plan

Once we’ve identified your individual risk factors, we assess how each could impact you and whether any require immediate treatment. Any current dental disease should be treated immediately to minimize and prevent further damage. Depending on severity, other issues like bite problems or unattractive teeth may be scheduled for later treatment.

Step 3: Execute the treatment plan.

With our priorities in place, we then proceed with treating your teeth and gums, the most pressing needs first. Throughout this step, our goal is to bring your oral health to the highest level possible for you.

Step 4: Monitoring and maintaining health.

Once we’ve achieved an optimum level of health, we must remain vigilant about keeping it. So we monitor for any emerging problems and perform preventive treatments like clinical cleanings to help maintain that healthy state. This also means regularly repeating our 4-step process to identify and update any new, emerging risks and incorporate them into our treatment strategy.
While this process may seem overly methodical, it can actually result in more efficient and cost-effective treatment. It’s the best way to ensure good health for your teeth and gums throughout your lifetime.

Dental Care During Pregnancy

Pregnancy and teeth

Pregnancy is a very special and exciting time for expectant women and their families. At this time, many moms-to-be make careful choices to try and do what’s best for themselves and their babies. Wondering what’s the right way to take care of your oral health when you’re expecting? Here are answers to a few of the most common questions about dental care during pregnancy.

Read more below

Q: Does pregnancy make a woman more susceptible to dental problems?

A: Yes. Pregnancy causes big changes in the levels of certain hormones, and these in turn have a powerful influence on your body. For example, many expectant moms experience food cravings and morning sickness at certain times. Changing hormone levels can also affect your oral health in various ways, including making your gums tender, swollen, and highly sensitive to the harmful bacteria in plaque.

Q: What are “pregnancy tumors” in the mouth?

A: These are benign (non-cancerous) overgrowths of tissue that sometimes develop on the gums during the second trimester. Often appearing between the teeth, these swollen reddish growths are thought to be caused by plaque bacteria. They sometimes go away on their own when pregnancy is over, but may be surgically removed if they don’t.

Q: Is it normal to have bleeding gums during pregnancy?

A: It’s not uncommon, but it does indicate that you need to pay careful attention to your oral hygiene at this time. Pregnancy hormones can cause the tiny blood vessels in your gums to become enlarged; when plaque bacteria are not effectively removed from the mouth, the gums may become inflamed and begin to bleed. This condition is often called “pregnancy gingivitis.” If left untreated, it can progress to a more serious form of gum disease called periodontitis. That’s one reason why regular brushing and flossing are so important during pregnancy — as are routine professional cleanings.

Q: Is it safe to have dental cleanings and check-ups during pregnancy?

A: Yes; in fact, it’s a very good idea to have at least one. Studies have shown that women who receive dental treatment during pregnancy face no more risks to their developing babies than those who don’t. On the other hand, poor oral health is known to cause gum disease, and is also suspected of being linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes. Routine dental exams and professional cleanings can help you maintain good oral health and avoid many potential problems during this critical time.

Q: Should I postpone more complicated dental work until after I have a baby?

A: It depends. A study recently published in the Journal of the American Dental Association found it was safe for pregnant women to have routine procedures like fillings, root canals, and extractions, even if they require local anesthesia. So treatments that are essential to an expectant mother’s health shouldn’t be put off. However, if you’re planning to have cosmetic dental work, it might be best to err on the side of caution and wait until after your baby is born.

How to Maintain a Healthy Mouth, Teeth, and Gums During Pregnancy

Brushing your teeth

  • If you have morning sickness, rinse your mouth with water after vomiting.
  • Brushing your teeth after vomiting (which is acidic) can wear away the enamel. Wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth.
  • Brush your teeth, gums, and tongue as often as you can. Ideally, after breakfast and before retiring for the night.
  • Brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Every day, use dental floss or interdental brushes to clean between your teeth.
  • Eating well is important

  • Consume a well-balanced diet.
  • Choose healthy snacks that are good for your teeth, such as cheese and low-fat yoghurt.
  • Limit added sugars, fats, and salty foods, especially between meals.

Drink plenty of water

  •  The best drinking water is fluoridated tap water. It’s free and keeps your teeth from decaying.
  • Soft drinks, cordials, juice, sports drinks, and energy drinks with added sugars should be avoided because they increase the risk of dental decay.

Dental examination

  • Consult your dentist before or soon after becoming pregnant.
  • It is safe to receive dental treatment while pregnant.
  • Inform your dentist that you are or may be pregnant.

Sudden Toothache and Emergency Dental Treatment Melbourne

Sudden Toothache and Emergency Dental Treatment Melbourne

Toothache can happen for many reasons. Sometimes the reason is obvious – if you’ve been hit in the face or bitten into something hard – but other times it can seem like the pain comes out of nowhere.

Sudden Toothache and Emergency Dental Treatment Melbourne

Tooth Pain Can Signal Major Problems

Experiencing any kind of pain in your jaw or around your teeth can indicate a more serious oral health issue. Often, though, if the tooth pain is minor, most people tend to ignore it, hoping that likely it will go away on its own. This might happen, but eventually, the pain will return and when it does it will probably be more intense.

Any time that you experience pain in your body, it’s telling you that something is not quite right. The severity of the pain will generally be in direct relation to the severity of the problem. For tooth pain, even the slightest inkling of pain could indicate potentially serious problems developing.

The most common causes of tooth pain –especially the minor types of pain- are cavities, cracks in the teeth, infections along the gum line, and pressure being placed against the teeth.

If you have a cavity, usually you won’t notice it. A cavity is a hole in the tooth that is caused by erosion due to improper cleaning or consuming harmful foods or beverages. If the cavity gets deep enough, it can expose the tooth’s nerve and this can cause significant pain. It may start out as minor, but it can build.

Filling the cavity may not be enough; a root canal may be required to deaden the nerve endings.

If you have a cracked tooth, this can expose the nerve in the tooth and it can be extremely painful. Infections along the gum line can begin with a reddening or bleeding of the gums and if left untreated it can lead to tenderness, soreness, and significant pain. Weakened gums could also lead to weakening of the teeth.

If your teeth are out of alignment, your wisdom teeth are beginning to push out, you could experience some pain. This could require braces to correct the alignment issue or pulling out the tooth or teeth that are placing pressure on others.

If you experience any type of tooth pain, make an appointment as soon as possible to visit your dentist. It may be a minor issue that can be corrected right then, but ignoring it will almost always lead to more serious dental problems.

What are the symptoms of a toothache?

Feelings of pain and discomfort are the obvious signs of a toothache, but this can vary from a mild ache that comes and goes to severe pain that’s constant or only happens when you bite down. The pain may be localised in one tooth or feel like it’s spread across a few teeth.

Toothache may be accompanied by other symptoms, including:

  • pain in the jaw, ear, head or face
  • sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet food and drink
  • swelling around the tooth or in other areas
  • bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
  • bleeding from the mouth
  • pus or fluid coming out of the gum
  • fever

Keep Alert to These Signs of Impending Tooth Decay

Although preventable, the occurrences of tooth decay are all too common. Yet decay doesn’t appear out of the blue: certain mouth conditions set the disease in motion.

Here are a few signs of such conditions to watch for — they could be telling you you’re at higher risk for tooth decay.

Visible plaque. Plaque is a thin film of bacteria and food accumulating on tooth surfaces and a prime haven for causing periodontal disease. If you actually see it — a crusty, yellowish film — that means there’s a large, unhealthy amount of it. It’s essential to remove it daily through diligent brushing and flossing and more thorough office cleanings at least twice a year.

Poor saliva flow. One of this bodily fluid’s functions is to neutralize mouth acid, usually thirty minutes to an hour after we eat. If saliva flow is inadequate, though, acid levels may remain high and endanger the enamel. “Dry mouth” can occur from a number of causes, including some medications and chemotherapy treatments. It’s important to alleviate the cause if possible by changing medications or stimulating saliva flow through other means.

Tooth shape and appliances.

Largely determined by heredity, your teeth contain unique, tiny grooves known as pits and fissures that could harbor plaque. Certain appliances like retainers, braces or night guards can inhibit saliva flow and cause your teeth to retain more plaque. It’s important then to adjust your hygiene efforts to offset these anatomical or treatment factors.

Acid-producing conditions.

Diseases like gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) or eating disorders can introduce stomach acid into the mouth that is highly erosive to tooth enamel. It’s imperative for you or a family member to control these conditions through medication, dietary changes, or — in the case of eating disorders — behavioral therapy.

Eating habits.

Sugar and other carbohydrates are a ready food source for bacteria. Likewise, acidic foods and beverages (like coffee, tea, and sports or energy drinks) can cause high acid levels for too long. Cut back on eating and drinking these foods and beverages, especially as snacks, to reduce acid levels that could lead to decay.

When to see dentist

Toothache sometimes goes away on its own, but if it’s a symptom of a more serious problem, delaying treatment could extend your suffering and give infections the chance to spread. Some problems that start in the mouth can spread to other parts of the body and affect general health.

It’s better to be safe than sorry, so you should always schedule a check-up with your dentist if you’re not sure why your tooth is hurting or if you want advice about treatments and home remedies, especially if a toothache lasts longer than 2 days.

  • If any of your teeth or dental restorations have broken or come loose, call an emergency dentist for advice or to book a same day appointment.
  • If you have swelling, fever, trouble breathing or other possible signs of an infection, go to the emergency room for urgent medical attention.

Home remedies for toothaches

If you think your toothache is likely to go away, or you can’t see your dentist today, it’s important to know how to relieve pain and discomfort from home. Your dentist can give you personalised advice based on your individual needs, but everyday tooth pain can often be reduced with:

  • over-the-counter painkillers
  • placing a cold compress or ice pack against your outer cheek
  • avoiding overly hot, cold, sweet, hard, crunchy or sticky food and drink
  • following good oral hygiene, using a soft toothbrush
  • keeping your head upright on a pillow when you sleep
  • rinsing your mouth with salt water (not recommended for children)

Toothaches can happen any time and can’t always be avoided, but you can lower your risk of tooth pain by following good brushing and flossing habits, watching what you eat and drink and keeping up with your regular dental check-ups.
