If you have a tooth or several teeth that are damaged or missing, you might be curious what you can do to restore both the function and the look of your smile. Two of the ways we do this for our patients is to use dental crowns and bridgework. Let’s discuss more about what each of these procedures entail.
Dental crowns are an effective means of restoring and reshaping damaged teeth. Dental crowns are used to provide your teeth with essential protection and support.
Both crowns and almost all bridges are fixed prosthetic devices that are used to restore smiles. Unlike dentures, these are permanent devices that you cannot take out and clean daily. Instead, crowns and bridges are cemented onto your existing teeth or implants. Made of natural, tooth-coloured materials, a dental bridge looks like a real tooth would. Cosmetic dental bridges are used to fill in a missing or badly decayed tooth by “bridging” the gap of the surrounding teeth. The bridge would consist of a pontic (tooth filler) and be fitted to the two adjacent teeth or abutments surrounding the missing tooth using dental crowns.

Porcelain Crown Procedure
Affordable Dental Crowns in Melbourne CBD | Tooth replacement option with Dental Bridges Melbourne h6>
A crown is a restorative that covers, or “caps,” to strengthened a damaged tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size. Crown can be used to improve the tooth appearance, shape or alignment. Crowns are necessary when a tooth is generally broken down and fillings won’t solve the problem. If a tooth is cracked a crown holds the tooth together to seal the cracks so the damage doesn’t get worse. Crowns are also used to support large fillings when there is not enough tooth surface remaining to attach a bridge. Crowns protect weaker teeth from fracturing or restore fractured teeth and they also cover badly shaped or discoloured teeth.
Porcelain Crown Procedure
The porcelain teeth crown procedure takes place over two office visits.
-
FIRST APPOINTMENT -PREPARATION, IMPRESSIONS, TEMPORARY
During your first visit, we will prepare your tooth, removing any decayed damaged tooth and preparing the existing tooth for the crown.
To prepare the tooth for a crown, it is reduced so the crown can fit over it . A one to two millimeter dimension all around the tooth and on top is removed to fit the crown while strengthening and preserving the remaining natural tooth structure
We will then take a precise impression or mould of the remaining tooth material, which will be used as a guide to creating your new porcelain crown.
A temporary crown is fitted over the tooth until the permanent crown in made.
This impression of your tooth will be sent to a specialty dental laboratory, where your natural looking porcelain crown will be fabricated to your exact needs.
-
SECOND APPOINTMENT -CEMENTATION
Once we have your finished porcelain crown from the lab, you will return to the office, where we will apply a special dental adhesive to bond your new crown to the existing tooth structure. Once permanently cured, this adhesive will create a strong, permanent bond, and your new porcelain crown will be complete and it becomes your new tooth.

Advantages amd disadvantages of all-porcelain and all-ceramic crowns
Affordable Dental Crowns in Melbourne CBD | Tooth replacement option with Dental Bridges Melbourne h6>
All-porcelain is generally not as strong as porcelain fused to metal. It has to be bonded to the tooth in order to have adequate strength for oral function. The bonding technique is very demanding.
With porcelain fused to metal, the porcelain has to be opaque in order to block out the appearance of the metal underneath. They all also eventually develop an unsightly dark line at the margin where the edge of the crown meets the tooth.
Some of the all-ceramic systems that have an inner ceramic core with an outer layer of porcelain baked on require more tooth reduction. Grinding away more of the tooth is often not desirable.
Some of the ceramic materials that are very tough and fracture resistant are also quite abrasive against the opposing teeth. Of the crowns listed above, the Empress is the kindest to the teeth it chews against. There are several factors that need to go into the selection of a crown material: strength requirements, aesthetic requirements, the abrasivity of the material against the opposing teeth, and the skills of the dentist.
There is not a single crown that is clearly superior for all situations. Many cosmetic dentists will have several types that they will use, each for a different situation.

Why are dental crowns so expensive?
Affordable Dental Crowns in Melbourne CBD | Tooth replacement option with Dental Bridges Melbourne h6>
When a tooth gets damaged, it requires a cap or a covering to protect it. This covering is known as a dental crown. It is a permanent cap cemented on the tooth, and it is designed such that it gives the tooth a natural appearance.
There are several reasons why a tooth may need a dental crown, and they include the following:
- After the root canal treatment, the tooth becomes brittle. Hence, a dentist places a crown to protect the underlying tooth and lower the risk of cracking or fracturing
- A discolored tooth which does not match the other teeth, a crown can be used to cover the blemish and ensure that it blends with the other teeth
- Sometimes a crown is used instead of a large filling.
Though crowns can be costly, they are a profitable option that reinforce strong and durable teeth. Imagine achieving back the strength and durability of your natural teeth in two dental visits. That’s worth making an investment for!
Preparing teeth for the crown requires a lot of knowledge and experience. The entire process is very delicate and requires a lot of attention to details on the part of dentist and a team. It also involves very significant expense for the laboratory fees and supplies. Given the amount of effort, it is only fair for the dental practice to charge meaningful fee for this type of service.
Some of the reasons for the high cost of dental crowns include:
- Time: Around 45 to 90 minutes are required for preparing the tooth which has to receive the crown.
- Instruments and dental materials are expensive
- Lab charges: Lab charges are included in the costs charged by the dentist. These charges differ according to fabrication and customization process which differs for each tooth
If you have not got your needy tooth correctly protected with a dental crown then you may face the following problems:
- Dental discomfort
- Tooth fracture
- Poor aesthetics
The functions served by a dental crown make it worth paying a big amount for.
