  • ( FAQ ) General & Cosmetic Dentistry Costs in Melbourne

Q: How much will the treatment cost?

A: Fees vary for each treatment and for each patient. It is almost impossible to let you know roughly especially over the phone as to how much procedures cost without actually seeing your teeth. With any procedure the best thing to do is come in and see either Dr Castro for a consultation. At this appointment you will find out all of your treatment options, have any questions answered and gain an estimated quote and treatment plan

Q: Will my private health insurance cover the cost of treatment?

A: Depending on your level of dental (extras) coverage will determine what and how much treatment is covered. Most treatment is claimable through your insurance but rebates do vary. At your consultation appointment – which you are able to claim as long as you have a minimum of basic extras cover – you will receive a treatment plan and quote that will contain item numbers you can take back to your private health insurance. They will let you know what and how much you are covered for.

Q: How much does a Smile Makeover Cost in Melbourne?

A: A Smile Makeover can involve many different areas of Dentistry including Orthodontics, Periodontics, Implants, Crowns, Veneers and Teeth Whitening. It can range from simply whitening teeth to a full mouth smile makeover. A Smile Makeover can be performed in different ways and with different materials. The complexity can vary form individual to individual.

We can give you some ideas, but the answer has a lot in common with the question "How much is a Car?" or "How much is a House?" Those cost can vary over the map and what model of a car is, can't they? You will be seeing the same thing in Cosmetic Dentistry.

Then the two important quesion also have to be anwered, What is your level of expectation of perfection and how difficult or easy will your treatment be?

Q: "I was given a cheaper Cosmetic Dentistry Fees over the phone by one dental office in Melbourne"

A: We see a lot of patients shopping over the phone for best price and based decision as to the treatment cost over the phone enquiry and estimated cost given by them by an office receptionist. But those over the phone figures could just be an estimate of fees, someone can throw in a small figure or fees just to get them in their door, but that it isn't the correct fees.

Price-shopping for cosmetic dentistry over the phone would be like comparing Apples over oranges. The dental costs provided over the phone shopping could be based on approximate prices and should be used as a general guide only and do not factor any complexities or variances that may arise on an individual basis.

As every patient has individual needs the only way to get an accurate dental costing is to have a thorough examination and consultation and discuss your goals and also your budget.

Q: Dentist prices in Melbourne vary a lot between dental Offices. How do you set your fees?

A: Our fees are based upon our care, skills and judgment and the time necessary to provide a high level of service

Q: " The Dentist Cost is so high"

A: We understand a beautiful smile and great oral health is a significant investment. Naturally, you want to be sure you are getting a good value. One thing to ask yourself, are you concerned that the fee is too high for the recommended treatment or is the amount of the fee difficult for you right now? Perhaps the best way we can help you in your decision is to review the benefits of having the treatment and the risk of not having it. By going ahead with the recommended treatment, you will prevent potentially a small problem getting worst which consequently needing extensive and expensive treatment at later future times. And in terms of appearance, the treatment will put you on your way to smile anyone would be proud of.

Q: Why are dental procedures so expensive?

A: While most people wouldn't mind a brighter or straighter smile, it's pretty rare to find someone who actually enjoys visiting the dentist, even for basic cleanings. For many, the discomfort of having a veritable stranger taking metal picks, tubes, scrapers and other tools to their wide-open mouths is too much to bear. And given the country's ever-tightening financial waistband, there's another aspect of seeing the dentist that's equally daunting: the bill.

Those who have visited a dentist -- or considered it -- in recent years know that even the most basic dental procedures can be quite costly. Dental fillings can range from more than $100 to nearly $300 each, depending on the size of the filing, while more invasive and time-consuming procedures like a crown or molar root canal go for about $1,000 per tooth or more.

There are a number of reasons why dental procedures are so expensive. First, services are performed by trained professionals. Dentists are doctors who go through many years of college, dental school and specialized) training. Like many other professionals -- lawyers, accountants, expert mechanics -- dental services are priced accordingly.

The big boys, of course, play with big toys. The tools on hand at a general dentistry practice include highly specialized equipment that is not only pricey to purchase, but also to maintain. Film X-ray machines cost upwards and newer digital models go for more. A simple dental chair with the necessary light, trays and hookups, meanwhile, costs a lot. This, of course, doesn't take into account the costs of surgical tools, as well as the anesthesia and other medications used in procedures such as root canals and filings. Additionally, dentists often turn to third-party labs and other dental product companies for things like crowns and dentures, which can also drive up the costs of certain procedures

Yet tools, drugs and lab work aren't even the most costly part of doing business for many dental professionals. Overhead costs of running a dental office are huge. Anywhere from 60% to 80% of what a patient pays goes toward the expense of running a modern dental practice. Dentists pay for rent or mortgage payments on their office space, payroll for hygienists, office managers and receptionists, health insurance, taxes, supplies, business insurance and technology -- just to name a few. "A lot of people would be surprised to know how tight the profit margins are.

Q: Factors that influence the Cost of Cosmetic Dentistry Melbourne Clinic prices

A: Today a healthy and beautiful smile is more important than ever, which is why many people are turning to cosmetic dentistry. While many people wish to perfect their smile, sometimes the cost of this treatment can be a big worry. The great news is that reasonably priced options are available today and payment options also make it easier than ever to enjoy a great smile. If you’re worried about cosmetic dentistry prices, here is a closer look at.

Many different factors can influence what you pay to have cosmetic dentistry procedures completed. One big factor happens to be the type of treatment that you choose. If the treatment needed is limited, the price will be fairly low. However, if more extensive treatment is needed, cosmetic dentistry prices can quickly increase based upon the specific treatment needed.

When people choose to have cosmetic procedures done on their teeth, they often forget to figure in the laboratory charges when figuring the approximate cost of treatment. Certain procedures may require some work in a laboratory, which will result in charges from the laboratory. While some dentists include this amount in the total cost, sometimes these charges may be separate. If you’re trying to figure out the overall cost of your cosmetic treatment, don’t forget about possible laboratory charges.

In some cases, additional surgery may be needed for those undergoing cosmetic dentistry procedures. For example, those who decide on dental implants may require additional surgery to get the implant site prepared. Preoperative and postoperative surgical procedures are sometimes needed and can increase the overall cost of the cosmetic treatment needed.

Now that you understand some of the factors that can affect cosmetic dentistry costs you may be wondering how much certain procedures will cost you. While the end cost can vary, here is a look at the estimated cost for certain procedures.

    Dentistry not 'black and white'.
Unfortunately in dentistry, more than in medicine, things are not absolutely black and white. So there are a lot of shades of grey and it depends very much on the dentist’s personal experience, expertise and training."

The patient's own level of expectations and perfectionism, medical and dental history, oral hygiene status as well as their likelihood to follow a treatment plan can also influence the dentist's decisions.

Dentist are not basically trying to tell you something different to make more money, but they have different ideas, different trainings. And they see things differently. And it’s extremely variable.

If you want to know the cost of a smile makeover, it makes sense to go to the dentists who know how to do it correctly and who can actually create a beautiful smile. Why get a smile makeover in the first place if the result is going to be a mediocre smile?

    • Cosmetic dentistry, while it requires great expertise, is not a legally distinct specialty. Therefore, if you end up with low-quality esthetic dental work, your legal recourse is generally only to challenge the work from a functional perspective. Your work will be judged by the standard of quality of general dentistry, not the standard of excellent cosmetic dentistry. So if you choose a dentist because the fees are low, you generally have no recourse if the work does not meet your esthetic expectations.

    • Second, to become an expert cosmetic dentist, a dentist has to spend many hours away from the office in continuing education. Not only are the course fees high, but the cost in lost time away from the office is much higher. And the dentist generally has to travel to interstate or overseas cities to obtain this training. Naturally, the cosmetic dentist will want to be compensated for this tremendous expense by charging more for these procedures than a general dentist.

    • Third, dental insurance plans are designed to provide you with a basic standard of general dental care. While many cosmetic dentistry procedures are covered by dental insurance plans, they are only covered at a functional level. The insurance company may help you pay for a crown to physically protect your tooth but won’t pay the extra cost required to make it beautiful. Furthermore, some dental insurance plans maintain lists of dentists called “preferred providers” or “network dentists” who are willing to discount their fees in order to receive referrals from the insurance company. Don’t expect any expert cosmetic dentists to agree to these insurance company terms.

    • Fourth, beautiful cosmetic dentistry requires the use of expensive materials, first-class cosmetic dental labs, and usually extra time and effort on the part of the cosmetic dentist. All these extra costs are factored into the fee.

    • Cosmetic dentistry is defined as any type of dental procedure that serves to improve the appearance of a patient's teeth, as opposed to other dental procedures that are more concerned with the health of the patient's teeth. The cosmetic dentist is more concerned with improving a person's overall appearance and self-confidence. While many dentists do both, it is important to make this distinction when it comes to dental care. One is considered necessary and the other is not.

When it comes to cosmetic dentistry, the main thing which tends to put people off is the cost of treatment. Cosmetic dentistry costs vary from practice to practice, however no matter where you go the treatment will never be cheap. Generally the higher the prices, the better care you will receive afterwards.

Q: Other Factors that affect Cosmetic Dentistry Cost in Melbourne

A: Just like the cosmetic dentistry costs vary from practice to practice, the prices will also include different things too. Some Practices will include aftercare, while others will include very little apart from the treatment.

It is hard to give an exact sum as to how much you will have to pay. Cosmetic dentistry prices will vary depending upon how severe your problem is. Sometimes you will have to have extra work done if the work is so severe. For example you may need veneers but you may first need quite a lot of the original tooth removed. Some cosmetic dentists will charge extra if a lot of work has to be done on top of the procedure.

If you look around you will be able to find cosmetic dentists who charge lower prices but you should always be wary of low prices. Ask the dentist what the price includes and whether there will be any extra fees. Sometimes it is not made overly clear what the cost actually is and that can cause problems for many patients.

Overall the cost of cosmetic dentistry will vary from practice to practice. So always do a little research before you choose the right dentist to suit your needs.

    Our Melbourne Dental Care Prices

Q: Why do Cosmetic and General Dentist costs vary so much?

A: The cost of dental care services varies for a number of reasons, including:

    • The health and quality of the underlying teeth and gums. This can vary dramatically from patient to patient. We like to use an analogy when it comes to the quality of teeth and gums. It is a bit like comparing the foundations of your house; if they are not strong, then it is hard to build a brilliant new extension on the old house.

    • The type of material used. Whether composite (plastic), ceramic or gold materials are used will have a strong bearing on the costs of your dental procedure. Different materials vary greatly in terms of both time preparation and the number of visits required.

    • What treatment or procedures you actually need

    • How extensive and what level of treatment you need

    • The current condition of your teeth

    • Your level of health insurance (sometimes health insurance does not cover the cost of treatments such as cosmetic dental procedures)

    • The scope of treatment required; whether one or multiple teeth are involved

    • finally, how durable and ‘perfect’ you want the final result to be. Are you happy with a good wool carpet for your home’s floors or are you expecting Italian marble?!

It is important to keep in mind that, when it comes to dental care, the age-old adage is true: you really do get what you pay for. Cheap dentistry is exactly that. The better the quality of your dental treatment, the more likely it is to last for years, or even the rest of your lifetime (if carefully maintained). The boost to your confidence and self-esteem, as well as the actual functioning of your teeth and mouth, should be above looking for the cheapest bargain!

Q: Cheap cosmetic dental work abroad

A: The rise of dental tourism. Overseas dentists can offer cheaper rates, but what's the risk?
How far would you be willing to travel to see a dentist? A few suburbs? Across the city? Maybe even interstate? Would you fly to another country? It may sound excessive but, as dental costs continue to rise, some people are choosing to travel overseas for treatment. With reported savings of up to 75% in some countries, it's not surprising a growing number of people are packing their bags to chase cheap dentistry via dental tourism abroad.

While the Australian Dental Association (ADA) acknowledges that dental tourism is on the rise, they want people to be aware of the risks.

"For a third of the price and a holiday at the same time it sounds like an offer that's too good to be true - but it isn't that good," says former Federal President Dr John Matthews. "Most people go overseas because they want fairly complex dentistry done, and the more complex it is, the more likely that something will go wrong. And when it fails, it fails big time."

Patient need to understand the implications of taking their dental care offshore. "Overseas dentists may or may not have the training and experience, but with your Australian dentist it is very clear. If you see me you know where I've been trained and that I'm registered, and if you're not happy with the work there are avenues to complain.

A lot of people who choose to head overseas, they may be in for unexpected additional costs. A former patient of his chose to go to Asia for cosmetic dentistry, which was so badly done, it will take significant work and a lot more money to get it fixed at home.

The ADA has released a Dental Tourism Fact Sheet (http://www.ada.org.au/oralhealth/dentaltourism.aspx) that summarises the potential risks.

Q: Does my dental Insurance Cover Cosmetic Dental Work?

A: Like medical plans, most dental plans do not cover cosmetic dental work significantly. Dental Insurance will cover some cosmetic dental procedures but not others. Fixing a chip in a front tooth could be considered "cosmetic" and would be covered by dental insurance to a certain extent. Almost no procedure, with the exception of preventative care, is covered at 100% by dental insurance.

In our practice, I have seen insurance cover part of cosmetic porcelain veneers and bonding, which will help reshape, align and change the color of front teeth. A lot of this depends on the specific insurance plan and the reasons for doing the treatment. Check your dental benefit package to find out if you have cosmetic. Or contact your insurer. It's always a good idea to submit a pre-determination to an insurance plan to see if desired treatments are covered.

Dental insurance will never cover bleaching or tooth whitening. Talk with your dentists about what sort of cosmetic procedures you would like done, and they can give you a better idea of your coverage.

But before you get so down that the concept of smiling becomes irrelevant, make a quick call to your dental benefits provider. You should be able to get some answers there. And while you’re at it, call your dentist. He or she may be able to offer some lower-cost financing options that fit into your budget -- and that is truly something to smile about, even if your teeth aren’t perfect!

Q: Dental Insurance coverage of Cosmetic dentistry cost

A: Dental insurance will often help make your dental care more affordable. Purely cosmetic dentistry procedures are not covered by insurance, but many dental procedures have both cosmetic and health-related purposes, so cosmetic dentistry is often partially covered by dental insurance.

If insurance does not cover your procedure, or does not cover enough of the cost to make your procedure affordable, we work with financing companies that can help you stretch your budget to fit the cost of treatment. Whether you need as little as $200 or as much as $50,000, we offer options for you

Q: Things to Know about your Dental insurance.

A: When you take out health insurance to cover you for dental fees, you should be aware that:

    1. Each health fund determines what level of rebates it will pay, based on its own commercial requirements.

    2. An important aim of some health funds is, quite appropriately, to make profits for their shareholders as well as to provide rebates for their customers.

    3. The rebates payable on dental fees are unlikely, in many cases, to cover more than 60% for common dental items and may cover less than half the cost of complex and expensive procedures.

    4. For some people, these rebates may be of assistance in offsetting some of the costs for more expensive procedures but some arrangements may not always represent value for money for routine dentistry for you and your family.

    5. If you have a problem with your private health insurance, you should contact the fund directly. If you are unable to reach a satisfactory agreement with your fund, contact the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman, an independent body formed to help resolve complaints and provide advice and information. Before paying premiums for dental benefits, or selecting a particular benefit table, you should ensure that these costs represent value for you and your family.

Unlike Medicare, dental fees are not subsidised by the Federal Government and there is no recognised fee schedule.

Dental Insurance - Options, Reviews and Advise

Not everyone is fortunate enough to have “gold standard” health insurance coverage to take care of every possible combination of health care situation.

When it comes to dealing with dental care, having a private dental health insurance plan is your best option to deal with unexpected dental costs.

However, what is the right type of dental coverage for you?

Like most things in life - private dental coverage is not a 'one size fits all' solution, so picking the right plan from the outset is imperative. If you don't, you'll pay hundreds more than you need to, or worse, risk being improperly covered when you need it most.

There are an overwhelming number of plans to choose from, with different options available (and an overwhelming amount of fine print to read through).

Lets clear up the dental health insurance myth in Australia so that you can make a confident and informed decision.

How It Works: Health Insurance Dental

In Australia, you don't specifically look for ONLY dental coverage per se, as dental coverage will fall under your health insurance plan.

Basic dental treatments are usually covered by your health insurance plan by default (regular check-ups, cleaning etc.) and you have the option to add on extra’s dental cover for an extra premium (which will cover you for larger dental procedures)

Types Of Coverage - Whats Best For You?

Typically, dental coverage is available in one of two ways in Australia: general and major dental. Exactly what is classified as general or major is not black or white; it varies from one health insurance provider to the next, but in general, according to PrivateHealth.gov.au:

    • General dental coverage: This refers to annual checkups, cleaning & fluoride treatment, minor fillings, and in general, most types of preventative dental work.

    • Cosmetic dental work, which is anything that enhances appearance and is not medically necessary (e.g. teeth whitening or dental implants) is NOT covered by health funds or Medicare.

    • Lots of health funds offer basic levels of coverage as standard inclusions, with additional coverage options available as “extras”. Typically, the basic “extra's” coverage usually includes General dental procedures only.

    • Additional “extras” options are usually offered that include treatments under both General and Major dental categories.

"So, Should I go for a health fund that covers general dental, or look for a plan that covers general + extra coverage for major dental work?"

Selection of an appropriate type of policy is largely a function of your individual dental coverage requirements - For example:

    • Young individuals (or couples), whose dental health is relatively good, may opt for general coverage
    • Families or elderly individuals may be better served opting for a plan that provides major dental coverage.

If you are relatively young and your teeth are in good health, there is generally no need to spend money on a plan that covers you for major dental complications. A basic plan that covers you for general dental, will be good enough; just make sure you take advantage of the discounted preventive dental benefits to ensure your teeth stay in good shape!

If you feel like you will need an expensive procedure at some point in the future, for example, dental implants or dental veneers, then a higher level of cover is going to cost you more in the short termbut save you more in the long run.

How To Choose Dental Health Insurance

With so many health insurance providers available to choose from, it’s hard to decide whom to select as your provider of choice. Always do your own research and make decisions based on your own unique circumstances (rather than taking advice from your know-it-all neighbour)

Start by looking at the following obvious factors:

    • Your age
Extra dental coverage may be required as you get older

    • The state of your dental health
Some seniors have enviable dental health, while some young adults may have severe dental issues. Select your coverage based on what your individual needs are.

    • Your financial state
Individuals that are in a high-income bracket, or those that are already enrolled in an employer-sponsored "gold standard" health care plan may not find extra coverage overly beneficial.

    • The economics of it
Though individuals may enjoy great dental health, dental insurance should be decided upon based on the economies of the collective family unit. The larger the family, the greater the potential for dental expenditure, which might require extra coverage. When choosing your insurance provider, look for “freebies” that are offered.

In some cases, a fund might offer priority dental appointments to its members. What this means is that members get preferential treatment when it comes to booking appointments or seeing a dentist, even if it is an unscheduled visit. For busy individuals this might be an invaluable perquisite because of their hectic schedules. Your dental cover rebates will vary significantly depending on the level of “extras” you opt for.

What are the annual limits? Most funds will typically set an annual limit for each of the “extras”, while others may not have limits for certain extra coverage (such as Preventable checkups etc.) options. The lower the limit, the less you will benefit. The higher the annual limits, the more you'll save.

Is there a waiting period? Make sure you read the fine print on how long your fund expects you to wait before any type of dental procedure is performed. Some funds have a 2 month waiting period (for General and Preventive procedures), while Major dental procedures could have wait times of up to 12 months. The maximum allowable waiting period is 12 months, so ideally look for something with a shorter waiting period.

What will my out of pocket expenses be? always ask what out of pocket expenses will be for general and major dental procedures, to get a good idea of how much you will benefit. Even though you are paying for coverage, there will generally be out of pocket expenses. Pick 5 dental procedures (a few general, and a few major) and ask a few health insurance providers what your out-of-pocket expenses will be.

Do you offer 'no gaps' benefits? Some funds offer “NO GAP” provisions to their members; what that means is that members have no gap (out of pocket payment) to incur when they visit their dentist for procedures such as check-ups, removal of plaque, cleaning, x-rays and other routine treatments. Most good providers will offer a no gap option nowadays.

PRO TIP: Keep your eye out for “special offers” from funds, during which they may waive (or reduce) the wait times associated with some of the “extras”. This is the best time to sign up to a new health insurance provider – during a sale!

A Review Of The Best Health Insurance For Dental Plans In Australia

With so many providers available to choose from, it’s hard to decide whom to select as your provider of choice. Since dental coverage falls under your health insurance plan, a very common question we get asked is: "What is the best health insurance for dental?"

Here are a few that you may like to take a closer look at for general and major dental care:

The Best Dental Insurance For General Dental Coverage

Chances are that you already have private health coverage, but the confusing question is, exactly what type of dental work are you covered for?

If you you have ancillary or extras with your health insurance cover, you should be able to get free (or low cost) preventative dental care, which is the best way to prevent expensive dental complications from arriving in the future.

PRO TIP: If you current health insurance provider does not provide you with reduced cost or free preventative dental care, consider moving to a company that does. Prevention is always better than the cure.

"Coverage for major dental procedures in Australia is quite weak"

And you're right! Unfortunately, Australian health insurance providers do not provide amazing benefits by any means for patients seeking major dental work. Considering that some procedures can cost in the tens of thousands of dollars, it's just to risky in their eyes.

While certain health providers do provide levels of coverage of up to $2000, you can only access this rebate once you've been with the company for 5 + years.

Your Preparation: The Best Dental Coverage

Health insurance exists to ensure that you're protected in case of unexpected dental costs (e.g. Root Canal Costs – which can be VERY VERY expensive if you’re not prepared, or wisdom teeth removal, which always seem to cost more than you were quoted for!)

As we age, we become more susceptible to diseases, including dental decay and orally borne illnesses – thats a fact we have to live with.

As we've revealed, coverage for major dental work is limited in Australia, meaning you'll likely have to fork out a good deal of your own savings if you unexpectedly require any type of major dental work. So what can you do about?

Prevention is better than the cure - always strive to take care of your teeth and this means making use of your health funds general/preventative benefits: make use of the free regular checkups and subsidies preventive dental care!

    Key Takeaways

Don't leave choosing a dental health plan until it's too late - join a policy that has great general dental coverage ASAP and start making use of your preventative dental care benefits.

Always read the fine print - Before signing up to a plan, to ensure you're getting the best benefits your money can buy. These points are what you should be looking at.

Plan ahead for the chance of major dental work - You now know that your health insurance coverage will be limited and weak at best, so have a backup plan ready to go. This can be either putting away savings, asking your dentist if they offer payment plans, or considering dental tourism to save money.

Being covered by an appropriate dental health insurance plan will help relieve the stress of having to deal with such unexpected costs.
